Probably one of the most highly regarded and ever growing hobby, sport and game form today is crappie fishing. It has grown from traditional and simple beginnings into something that is being regarded as an international sport. Crappies, as an overview belong to a family of the sunfish species and are found all over continental regions. They are also known as Calico bass but the names may vary depending on the area from which they are located.

Let us take a look at some of the basic biology lessons with regards to crappies, minus the terror teacher. Biologists classify the said species into two sub groups; these are the black crappie and the white crappie. First among the two is the black colored one which has a darker complexion with seven to eight spines, with spots on the anteroposterior region and is found mostly on northern states. They are often found settling on deep and extensive impoundments.

Meanwhile, the white crappie is light colored with six spines, imbibed with eight to nine bands vertically positioned on the sides and is caught mostly in the southern regions on quiet and dark waters.

Crappie fishing involves several techniques like still type of fishing, trolling, casting or drifting.

Crappie fishing success is also dependent on the strategy and the knowledge that you apply for every session you get involved in. spring time is the season of the year when crappie fishing is most likely to get successful. The species love to take cover, so it is very important to search for brush, artificial or stump cover at certain adequate depths and you will get to catch crappie. During the early moments of dawn, they are found mostly in the surface of the water. As the day begins to move in and the sun getting higher, they go deeper for about 5 to 10 feet but it all depends on the clarity of water. The crappies usually retreat deeper into 25 feet once the sun is at its peak during mid day.

Now, to get us to the core, let me discuss to you the details and simple methods of crappie catching. The first thing that you have to do is to locate an area for fishing. Once you have settled for the area, prepare your bait, then cast the rig within five feet in line underneath the bobber. Let your rig drift for some time. If it seems like nothing is happening, change the depth higher or lower for a depth of a foot at one time. You can try several depths until you meet a crappie.

Another rule that you have to keep in mind is to keep you bait moving constantly at slight speed or intervals. This will give you a higher chance of catching a crappie since the swimmers tend to love and catch baits that wriggle and move about, otherwise, you will have a hard time catching crappies.

Oh and one more thing, always remember to maintain your hooks sharp all the time for a more efficient crappie fishing.
