World record crappie 101: basic things to remember to catch
the record sized crappie
Any crappie angling enthusiasts cannot refuse the pull of the possibility of catching a world record crappie.
Although most of them catch crappie for the fish’s renowned sweet meat, there are those who jots down notes in high
hopes of catching the one that will break the current holder of the world record crappie, which is the 5lbs white
crappie caught in the waters of South Carolina in 1949.
That was by far the heaviest crappie recorded. So the opportunity of catching a larger and heavier one is still
open. There are still unexplored riverbanks in the United States or in other continents. But the more you frustrate
over catching a record crappie, the more the big crappie slips away. At least that is what the expert crappie
anglers say. The concept of haste makes waste apply to this matter. So if you really want to catch record breaking
crappie, do it slowly but surely. Look for signs. Study their nature. Know what are the right crappie fishing
tackles to use. Practice the techniques. And, most of all, be prepared.
Here are some of the most basic facts you should know of regarding crappies. If you study all of these, their
behavior including, it might help you catch a world record crappie.
1. Crappie species belong to the sunfish family. These species are non bass. They have big sucker mouths that
they use extensively for feeding since they do not have any tongue or teeth. This is precisely the reason why
crappie baits that go beyond the 3in size will never work for the crappie fish.
2. Expect a tough search operation. Crappie species are smart. If they probably have the world record size, they
do not want to be caught by any anglers easily. They hide well. They don’t hang out with smaller sized crappie.
They swim solo or look for crappie gangs their own size.
3. Crappie species see well compared to other clear water fishes. They have better vision compared to their
cousins, the bluegill, or probably better than the bass. They get attracted to colorful lures. However, as a wise
angler, you should know that the depth of the water would affect their vision. So it is not wise that you use red
and orange crappie baits on very deep waters. If you’re not sure what to use, then always use the white colored
crappie baits.
4. Always consider the location or your world record crappie fishing spot. The best record crappie teems on
murky green waters. Why? Because these waters indicate the fertile rate of blooming algae. Algae attracts
microscopic fish, which in return attracts smaller fishes, and lures the world record crappie in.
You should also consider going deeper than knee length waters. World record crappie thrives on the deepest part
of the river. It is where they live long and grow big.
Crappie species love to live in structured habitats. They live near the docks, underwater weeds, submerged trees
and brush, and huge rocks and drop offs.
5. Also one of the greatest things to remember if you want to catch a record crappie is the water temperature.
They love the warm temperature waters. Eventhough crappie fishes see better on cold temperature waters, they love
to live in very warm waters because it is where their food is abundant.
6. Consider the crappie fishes’ breeding season. This is the best time to catch world record crappie, as the
female ones will be so fat with their pregnancy and just waiting off for the right moment for them to lay their
eggs. As a wise angler, you should hunt near their nests, which are commonly found 10ft to 18ft beneath the water
surface.
